5 Billion Dead comes from the recesses of Orlando's underground metal scene slamming hard into the faces of the unexacting. What at first glance sounds like another nu-metal band
5 Billion Dead then hits you hard with a death metal sound all their own. Not many bands can mix the two genres successfully, but like we have seen recently in other genres (with the collaboration of Nelly and Tim McGraw, or
Linkin Park and Jay Z) it can be done. By mixing the two genres they have created a sound that can reach across the genre divide and appeal
to both fans of nu-metal and death metal alike.
The song structure and vocals are very
diverse combining elements of both death
metal and nu metal. With the low toned
growling that is a basic must in all death metal and the melodic vocals that you find in
nu-metal you have a very unique sound. The song structure is more along the lines of what you would hear from any top 40 nu metal band. The angst ridden frustration, fed up with the world content of the lyrics is simplistic in
nature. This helps the CD to flow along nicely and makes sure that the music is relatable to
all people on every level.
5 Billion Dead's new self titled 4 song EP is
only about 16 minutes long, however in those
16 minutes you find that you want more of
what 5BD has to offer. Each song shows a different side of the band and in those 4
songs I think that you get a pretty good idea of who 5 Billion Dead are.
The musical styling of the band has much to be noted. The drums stay strong and hard hitting throughout the entire EP. The bassist's playing style has a thick sound which adds to the darkness of tone. The guitar riffs are outstanding and help to keep each of the songs flowing from melodic to hard core nicely. The vocals deliver smooth sounding melodic tones when needed and quickly switch to the deep tone growling. Together 5BD has a sound that can't be classified or pinned down to one genre you cannot call them nu metal or death metal they are simply 5BD, a band that is ready to rock in a city near you!
