Snow Patrol's A Hundred Million Suns Tops Charts Worldwide Band To Play Special New York City Show December 1, 2008 US Tour To Follow
NEW YORK... In its first week of release, Snow Patrol's A Hundred
Million Suns landed in the top ten in the United States, number two in
the United Kingdom, and continues to sit at number 1 in their beloved
homeland Ireland. Awed, singer Gary Lightbody offered his thanks: "We
care little about chart positions, but I have to admit feeling very
proud. It is a great privilege to do what we do and be rewarded for it
by the love and success we've had around the world over the last few
years. This album means everything to us and we are delighted you have
taken to it."
Before being immersed in a sold out U.K. arena tour, the band will tour
stateside with a special show at New York's Bowery Ballroom, radio shows
in Baton Rouge, Dallas, and Denver, and wrap up with three FREE shows in
Phoenix, Las Vegas, and San Diego. While in New York, the band will also
showcase the results of a New York City kindergarten class's illustrated
interpretations of their album's title, A Hundred Million Suns. In
return, the class will receive a donation from Snow Patrol to their
school's art program and the winning artwork will be displayed at their
December 1, 2008 show at the Bowery Ballroom.
Five albums in and the band sounds and feels as invigorated and inspired
as ever. "This is our most complete record by far," says Lightbody. "A
Hundred Million Suns sounds like the marriage of everything we
learned... touched by our entire history and hopefully [it] sounds like
our future too."
Finding that right balance between commercial and critical acclaim, Snow
Patrol has attained worldwide superstar status, launching a U.K. arena
tour with their name at the tip-top of the bill. The press is on the
same side as the people, with The Daily Telegraph proclaiming "It is an
epic, widescreen, decidedly modern rock record." Spin defines the record
"likeably grand" and with their incredible grade-A review, The Onion
deems A Hundred Million Suns "Snow Patrol's biggest, most genuine effort
yet...the band's sincerity and effortless songwriting captivate on an
individual level as well as a stadium-sized one." The Los Angeles Times
unabashedly admits, "There aren't many songwriters who capture the
vulnerability and humor of being stupid in love as masterfully as Snow
Patrol singer and main songwriter Gary Lightbody."
A Hundred Million Suns is on pace to become the band's third consecutive
multi-platinum-selling release. Reunited with producer Jacknife Lee (U2,
R.E.M.), the band recorded half of the new album in Ireland and half at
legendary Hansa Studios in Berlin (made famous by David Bowie and Iggy
Pop's collaborations in the '70s). The resulting sessions delivered
classic Snow Patrol singles like "Take Back the City" and "Crack the
Shutters," but also inspired the quartet to literally stretch beyond
their comfortable boundaries, as witnessed on the album-closing
16-minute epic, "The Lightning Strike."
Snow Patrol are among a handful artists to have back-to-back platinum
selling albums in the U.K. with 2003's Final Straw and 2006's Eyes Open,
which featured the single "Chasing Cars" that recently received its
100,000th U.K. radio play and 2 millionth download in the United States.
