- Smokey Robinson Tribute On Ice is scheduled to play at the St. Pete Times Forum in Tampa, FL on Wednesday, November 11, 2009 at 7:30 pm. In addition to Smokey Robinson singing 12-14 songs, some of the world's finest figure skaters will perform a skating routine to each song performed by Smokey Robinson. Skaters scheduled to perform include Olympic Gold Medalist Brian Boitano, six-time U.S. National champion Todd Eldredge, World champion Yuka Sato as well as Jeffrey Buttle, Steven Cousins, Caryn Kadavy, Marie-France Dubreuil, Patrice Lauzon, Jozef Sabovcik, John Zimmerman and Silvia Fontana. The show will also be televised nationwide on November 22, 2009 at 4:00 pm EST on NBC.

Smokey Robinson was born and raised in Detroit, MI. In 1955 Smokey co-founded The Five Chimes, in 1957 the group was re-named The Matadors and changed to The Miracles in 1958. In 1960, the single, "Shop Around" became Motown's first number one hit on the R&B Singles Chart. In 1961, Smokey was appointed vice-president of Motown Records, a position he held for more than 25 years. In 1972, he left The Miracles and launched his solo career. His first solo album "Smokey" was released in 1973 and featured the top 10 R&B hit, "Baby Come Close." In 1974, Smokey released, "Pure Smokey," the album produced another top 10 R&B hit, "I Am I Am". In the 1980's, Smokey released seven albums with six singles hitting the top ten. His latest album "Time Flies When You're Having Fun" was released in 2009. In his career Smokey Robinson has recorded 37 Top Forty hits. A prolific songwriter, Smokey has written songs for such artists as Mary Wells, The Four Tops, The Temptations and Marvin Gaye. In his 50 year career Smokey Robinson has written more than 4,000 songs. In 1987, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame as both a solo artist and member of The Miracles making him one of the few recording artists to have two stars on the Walk of Fame. His rendition of our national anthem before game 5 of the 1986 World Series is considered one of the greatest ever done at a sporting event. In 1999, Smokey won a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award and on March 25, 2009 Smokey appeared on American Idol, mentoring the top ten contestants who performed classic Motown songs.
