Opening the album is the 16 minute 10 second demonically alluring “A Nightmare To Remember.” With an intensity that's strong enough to make babies cry, this opening track offers flawless transitions between tempos and a diverse range of musical and artistic templates. Vocalist James LeBrie brings the metal back into the track with his timeless vocals while guitarist John Petrucci lets loose with a wicked solo.
Black Clouds and Silver Linings slows down during “The Best of Times” and allows the spotlight to rest Jordan Rudess' keyboard while soft acoustic ambiance shadows in the background. However, it only takes a few minutes before classic Dream Theater jumps back in with John Myung's bass begging to be heard. “The Best of Times” was written by drummer Mike Portnoy in remembrance of his father who passed away. The tracks mellow, yet emotional feel is evident but shines during the closing with a magnificent drum solo by Portnoy.
The album concludes with “The Count of Tuscany” which takes up another 20 minute chunk of the record. This epic track effectively concludes the album by equally showcasing every member's endless talent. The melodic instrumentals and tantalizing vocals of Black Clouds and Silver Linings prove that with Dream Theater still has the edge and timelessness even 20 years after their commencement. Although the album only harbors six tracks, fans are sure to be satisfied. Each track offers the classic Dream Theater mix of progressive, metal, emotional, mellow and hard rocking vibes.
